23 ESPLANADE STREET
SHEARWATER
Directions to the starting point are:-
Head towards Hawley. Halfway along you will find Freer Street. Turn right and head for the sea. Turn right again into the Esplanade.
Take your bathers as it is right on the beach and the water is warm.
RIDE: (APPROXIMATELY 25-30KS).
From the Lakes we will ride up to the main roundabout on the Port Sorell road and continue on towards Squeaking Point.
After about 2 kms turn right towards the Thirlstane golf course and go past it until you see Appleby’s Road on your right.
Turn right into Appleby’s road here. After 1 km there will be a turn into Bakers Lane on the left. Take this road which will see you climb the hill and down the other side to a T junction at Wright’s Road.
Here turn left towards Moriaty. You will reach the Exeter Highway. Turn right towards Devonport and then 20 metres later turn left.
This will take you around the yellow shed to Moriaty Primary school on Bonney’s Lane. Go into the Moriaty School for a breather.
Stay on Bonney’s Lane as it meanders along and it will bring you to a junction where there is a newly renovated church. Ride past the church until you get to a bigger junction with Oppenheim’s Road. The signage should say Harford or point towards the Frankford highway. Turn Left.
Oppenheim’s Road takes you beside some farm dams and up a biggish hill to the Harford road where you will see on your left about 100 metres) the major junction with the Exeter highway. (Frankford Road…) Head towards Devonport.
After 2 kms there is a very dangerous bend on the Exeter Highway. At this bend go straight ahead onto Woodberry Lane as this will take you back to the Squeaking Point road where you started.
We will follow the main road back to the Lakes or you may turn down towards squeaking Point and left into Mill dam road and take the walking bridge over the Panatana rivulet into Port Sorell and follow the esplanade back..
Alternative rides are; – to do a circuit into Port Sorell and back to Hawley.
Another alternative is to follow the main group to the Moriaty School and instead of taking Bonney’s lane return to the Exeter Highway turning right and take a more direct route. Turn off at Parkers ford road where the sign says to Squeaking Point. Follow the road until you go past the golf course again and home.
Alternatively, another choice is to ride with the group and turn into Appleby road but do not turn up to Baker’s Lane. Continue straight and you will reach the intersection with the Port Sorell main road. Turn right here and make your way back to Hawley. Turn left at the big Shearwater/ Port Sorell Road roundabout and follow through to Hawley.
